Maharishi Charak Shapath: The first-year MBBS students of Government Madurai Medical College took the 'Maharishi Charak Oath' instead of the Hippocratic Oath during the initiation ceremony i.e. Program Induction Orientation Ceremony. This is the first time that medical students in the country have taken the Maharishi Charak oath instead of the Hippocratic Oath. But there has been an uproar over this change. After getting information about this, the Tamil Nadu government has indirectly expressed displeasure.
The government removed the dean from the post
Taking quick action, the state government has removed the dean of the college from the post. The Tamil Nadu government has placed the dean of Government Medical College, Madurai on a waiting list, after the case of Maharishi Charak administered the oath. However, state government finance minister PTR Palanivel Thiaga Rajan and revenue minister P Murthy were also present at the event.
The government ordered a departmental inquiry
Tamil Nadu government has sacked Dean Dr. Rathinvel and ordered a departmental inquiry for administering a modified 'Maharishi Charaka Oath' instead of the Hippocratic Oath at the oath ceremony of first-year students of Madurai Medical College. Dr. Rathinvel claimed that the student union secretary who prepared the oath had mistakenly downloaded Maharishi Charaka Sharath instead of the Hippocratic Oath. That's why it went wrong.
The minister said - I was shocked when the students started reading the Charak oath
Talking to the media after the program, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Rajan said that he was shocked when the students started reciting the Charaka oath. I was quite surprised when I heard the new oath, I always thought doctors take the Hippocratic oath. He said that politicians should also take the Hippocratic oath.
National Medical Commission had recommended the Maharishi Charak oath
Recently, as per the new changes in the health education framework, NMC i.e. National Medical Commission had recommended replacing the Hippocratic Oath taken by the medical students with the Maharishi Charak Oath. In the new guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission, it was said that all the candidates enrolling in medical education courses in the country should be administered the modified Maharishi Charak oath instead of the Hippocratic Oath administered during orientation.
Mandaviya had said - oath will not be forced
Interestingly, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had recently said in Parliament that the Maharishi Charak oath would be optional and medical students would not be forced.
