Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna retired on Tuesday, May 13, and handed over his charge to senior Supreme Court judge Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna (BR) Gavai. Justice Gavai will take the oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on Wednesday, May 14. President Draupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to him.
Appointment made after recommendation of name by Justice Khanna
As per the prescribed procedure, on April 16, Chief Justice Khanna recommended his name to the Central Government. Justice Gavai will have a tenure of six months and he will retire from the post on December 23 on attaining the age of 65. He is the most senior judge of the Supreme Court after the current Chief Justice Khanna.
Justice Gavai has long judicial experience.
Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Justice Gavai was promoted as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003. He became a permanent judge of the High Court on November 12, 2005. Justice Gavai has been a part of many constitutional benches in the Supreme Court, which have given many important decisions.
Who is Justice Gavai?
Justice Gavai was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019. He was born on 24 November in Amravati, Maharashtra. He is the son of late R.S. Gavai, who has been the Governor of Bihar and Kerala. He started his judicial career on 14 November 2003 as an additional judge in the Bombay High Court. As a judge, he has worked on various benches in Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji.
Gavai was part of the important decisions of the Supreme Court.
Justice Gavai was also among the five-member constitutional bench hearing the petitions challenging the decision to remove Article 370.
Gavai was also a part of the bench that rejected the Electoral Bond Scheme introduced for political funding.
He was also a part of the bench that heard the petitions filed against demonetisation.
