China has spread the web of drugs in an Islamic country like Pakistan. A Chinese company is making about one lakh liters of beer daily here. Apart from Sindh and Balochistan, the consumption of this beer is increasing rapidly in all the major cities.
There are strict laws regarding alcohol in Pakistan. Here special licenses are given for its sale. Till a few years ago, things like wine and beer were hardly available to the elite class.
The plant was closed earlier
German website DW has published a special report on China's beer trap in Pakistan. According to this, a few years ago, China set up a beer plant in Balochistan. It was closed after protests. Supply from China was still happening. Now outlets of Chinese company 'Hui' have opened in every major city of the country.
Beer is being sold openly and Pakistanis have become huge fans of it.
Now let's understand the issue a little deeper. Hui applied for a license in 2016 to provide beer to Chinese working in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It was approved by the Imran Khan government in August 2018.
Then came the year 2019, this year the plant of this beer company in Gwadar in the restive Balochistan province started with great fanfare. Angered by the inappropriate antics of the Chinese, thousands of people took to the streets. The plant was closed.
manufacturing unit resumed
DG Excise Mohammad Zaman Khan says – In 2016, Hui Coastal Distillery Limited applied for the license. We released this in 2018. At present, the Chinese company is making 65 thousand to 1 lakh liters of beer daily. Initially, the company used to sell this beer only to Chinese workers working in CPEC. Now all the local retailers in the country are selling it.
This Chinese company is making three types of beer in Pakistan. First- Hungchin Special Brew. Second- Hungchi Amber Lager. Third - Hui Cheng. A beer bottle (can) is 500 ml.
What do Pakistanis say?
Atif Hassan lives in Karachi. He says- I have 25 friends in my group. We all drink Chinese beer together. We have used this Chinese beer hundreds of times since Hui's plant started here.
According to a Hindu liquor seller from Karachi – this brand of Chinese beer is becoming popular very fast. The elite and middle class of Pakistan is using it a lot. The packing is also superb.
Sami Ibrahim explains its quality and says – This beer has 5 to 8% alcohol. This is the reason why people are liking this brand very much. With just two cans, I get very intoxicated.
not easy to get alcohol
According to the report – being an Islamic country, it is not easy to buy and drink alcohol in Pakistan. It is officially banned for Muslims.
Alcohol or beer is mostly used by non-Muslims. Most of the licenses of the shops are also reportedly with the non-Muslim community.
The people of Balochistan and Sindh claim that Chinese beer is easily available here. Many of its brands are in trend.
Earlier fewer brands were available. Now Chinese companies are increasingly wooing liquor seekers in Pakistan. Some new brands will be launched soon.
