Chinese state-backed hacker groups are targeting government institutions and companies around the world. These are known as Advance Persistent Threats (APTs) and are a decade-old group. Gruha Bose, a fellow researcher at the Indo-Pacific Center for Strategic Communications (IPCSC), wrote that the currently active APT41 and APT27 are the oldest and most dangerous groups that have demonstrated the potential to endanger the country's national security.
China's APT hacker group uses unusual malware tools to achieve its spying agenda. They constantly change their attack strategy to avoid getting caught. These spying campaigns of China are related to its five-year development plans. These groups are ranked based on their activities, target areas, and the support they have in government.
Some of the Chinese APTs are APT1 (PLA Unit 61398), APT2 (PLA Unit 61486), APT4 (Maverick Panda, SkipGroup, Wisp), APT16, APT26, APT27, APT40, APT41, according to a report by Mandient, a company in this sector. (Double Dragon, Vinti Group, Barium or Axiom), APT30, APT31. Each of these APTs has played a key role in leveraging strategic national security from target government institutions and companies in their activity of a particular year.
For example, APT26 targeted the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors, while APT16 focused on hi-tech, government services, media, and financial services companies from Japan and Taiwan. The infamous APT41 by the name of Double Dragon is also involved in cybercrime along with espionage. APT41 is engaged in finance-based activities targeting the video game industry. According to a FireEye Intelligence report, APT41 has targeted organizations in 14 countries in the past seven years, including France, India, Italy, Myanmar, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, the US, and the UK. Huh.
