Panaji, March 24 (IANS) Attempts are being made to disturb religious harmony in India and the supply of beef has been stopped in Goa in the name of religion, a BJP legislator said on Tuesday.
Speaking in the assembly, Michael Lobo, the Bharatiya Janata Party member from Calangute, asked Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to crack down on attempts to trigger religious intolerance in the state.
Citing instances of attacks on churches and prayer houses of minority communities in north India, Delhi in particular, Lobo said: "Attempts are being made to disturb peaceful harmony among Indians."
Lobo also linked the anti-minority incidents across India to the shortage of beef, an essential part of diet for Goa's 26 percent-strong Christian population.
"Beef is being stopped in the name of religion in Goa," Lobo said, referring to the chronic shortage of beef in the state for several months now.
The BJP leader also asked the chief minister to crack down on anyone trying to "disturb religious peace".
