The strength of the Indian Navy's fleet is going to increase further. Stealth Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mormugao is going to be commissioned later this week. 75 percent of the equipment and weapons installed in the destroyer are made in India only. The 7,400-tonne INS Mormugao has been named after the historic port city of Goa, Mormugao. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will commission it at the Indian Navy in Mumbai on December 18, the eve of Goa Liberation Day.
These things make Mormugao special
INS Mormugao is armed with missiles like BrahMos and Barak-8. Israel's multi-function surveillance threat alert radar 'MF-STAR' is installed in the country's most advanced guided missile destroyer. It will recognize the target present in the air from several kilometers away so that accurate targeting can be done. This destroyer is capable of hitting targets at a distance of 70 km on flying aircraft and 300 km on land or sea targets. INS Mormugao is equipped with a 127 mm gun, it also has an AK-630 anti-missile gun system. Mormugao is also fitted with two RBEU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers. Navy helicopters will be able to land on this even during extremely bad weather.
Can dodge enemy missiles
This warship, 163 meters long and weighing 730 tonnes, also can dodge missiles. 250 naval personnel including 50 officers will be stationed on this warship and it has 4 powerful gas turbine engines. Running at a speed of 56 kilometers per hour (30 nautical miles) in the sea, this destroyer can monitor 75 thousand square km of sea area. The induction of INS Mormugao will add to the strength of the Indian Navy in the Indian Ocean region and beyond. This ship is also capable of defending during nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare. The first ship of this project, INS Visakhapatnam, was inducted into the Indian Navy last year.
Imphal and Surat will be commissioned
INS Mormugao is the second of the 4 Visakhapatnam class destroyers being built at Mazagon Dockyard Limited, Mumbai under Project-15B at a total cost of Rs 35,800 crore. The third and fourth destroyers named Imphal and Surat will be commissioned indium Navy in 2023-2024.
