CP Radhakrishnan took the oath as Vice President on Friday. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to 67-year-old Radhakrishnan at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. NDA candidate Radhakrishnan won the Vice President election by defeating the India Alliance candidate, former Justice B Sudarshan Reddy, by a margin of 152 votes. After the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on 21 July, elections were held for the new Vice President on 9 September.

 

Resigned from the post of Maharashtra Governor

 

Earlier, after being elected Vice President, Radhakrishnan resigned from the post of Governor of Maharashtra. This information was given in a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. After Radhakrishnan's resignation, President Murmu has handed over the additional charge of Maharashtra to Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat. Devvrat will now take over the responsibility of the Governor of both states.

 

Elections were held after the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar.

 

During the recent monsoon session of Parliament, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President, citing health reasons, although his term was left for two years. Due to his resignation, mid-term elections were held.

CP Radhakrishnan, who came into active politics from the Sangh, worked for a long time in the BJP organization. He was the President of Tamil Nadu State BJP from 2004 to 2007. During this, in 2007, he did a 19,000 km long Rath Yatra in 93 days. Its purpose was to connect the rivers of the country, eradicate terrorism, implement the Uniform Civil Code, eradicate untouchability, and deal with the dangers of drugs. He was also in charge of Kerala BJP from 2020 to 2022. He is considered a leader with a strong hold in both the organization and administration. Radhakrishnan, who has the image of a humble and accessible leader, is called the Modi of Tamil Nadu by his supporters.

 

Radhakrishnan, who comes from the OBC community Kongu Vellalar (Goundar), is married to Sumati and has a son and a daughter. He was the Governor of Maharashtra before being selected as the NDA candidate for the post of Vice President. He became the Governor of Maharashtra in July last year. Earlier, in February 2023, he was appointed the Governor of Jharkhand. While being the Governor of Jharkhand, he took additional charge as the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. Radhakrishnan played an important role in the growth of the BJP in South India.

 

He entered public life as a volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He became a member of the State Executive Committee of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1974. In 1996, he was appointed the Secretary of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. After this, he was elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999. However, he had to face defeat from Coimbatore three times in a row in 2004, 2014, and 2019. As an MP, he was the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee (Ministry of Textiles). Apart from this, he was a member of the Special Parliamentary Committee formed to investigate the stock exchange scam.

 

Addressed the United Nations General Assembly

 

As part of a parliamentary delegation in 2004, Radhakrishnan addressed the United Nations General Assembly.

 

He was also a member of the first parliamentary delegation to visit Taiwan.

 

In 2016, he was made the chairman of the Kochi-based Coir Board, where he worked for four years. Under his leadership, record growth was recorded in coconut fibre exports from India.
