Hours after the Taliban promised to form an inclusive Islamic government and establish peace in Afghanistan, China has issued a warning. China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the Security Council, Geng Shuang, told the Taliban that they should rule peacefully but do not let Afghanistan become a haven for terrorist groups. Shuang's remarks came during an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan.
Geng told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan, chaired by India, that Afghanistan should never again become a haven for terrorists. This is the bottom line for any future political solution in Afghanistan to be firmly held.
He said that we hope that the Taliban in Afghanistan will fulfill their commitments honestly and completely get rid of terrorist organizations. He further said that all countries should fulfill their obligations following international law and Security Council resolutions, work with each other in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and terrorists such as Islamic State, Al-Qaeda. Firm action should be taken to stop the organizations.
He also warned about the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. He said that this terrorist organization can become active again, so it needs special attention. The ETIM is said to be an ally of al-Qaeda, a militant group based in China's unstable Xinjiang province. It is fighting for the independence of the province, which is home to 10 million Uighur Muslims. The UNSC Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee listed ETIM as a terrorist organization in the year 2002.
Apart from this, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made her first remarks about the Taliban's capture of power in Afghanistan in front of the media here on Monday. He said China saw the Afghan Taliban say on Sunday that the war in Afghanistan was over and that they would negotiate to form an open, inclusive Islamic government in Afghanistan and take responsible steps to protect Afghan citizens and foreign diplomatic missions. He said that China hopes that these comments will be implemented so that there is a smooth transfer of power in the situation in Afghanistan.
China responded to the question of recognizing the Taliban government
When asked when China would recognize the Taliban government and whether Beijing would put any conditions for it, Chunying gave a clever reply. He said Beijing is maintaining contact and communication with the Taliban and playing an endeavoring role in promoting a political solution in Afghanistan, fully respecting the will of all parties.
