Estimates of record electricity demand in summer, demand may go up to 2.29 lakh MW

With the growth of the manufacturing and service sector, the electricity demand is increasing continuously, and keeping in view the pace of development of the country, this summer is expected to be a record demand for electricity. To ensure smooth power supply to people in summer along with industrial production, the Ministry of Power has directed all imported coal-based power plants to generate electricity at full capacity.

 

Peak demand may reach 2.29 lakh MW

The Ministry of Power can issue such instructions in special circumstances under the Electricity Act. According to the Ministry of Power, the peak demand for electricity can reach 2.29 lakh MW by April this year itself, which will be the highest ever. Last year, the peak demand in summer was estimated at 2.15 lakh MW. From March 16, instructions have been issued to all coal-based power plants, including those based on imported coal, to produce electricity at full capacity for the next three months. So that there is no shortage of electricity in summer.

 

The government will decide the price of electricity

According to sources, a government panel will decide the price of electricity produced from power plants based on imported coal. These plants will sell power through power exchange. The peak demand for electricity is continuously increasing and in December last the peak demand reached 2.06 lakh MW while in November last year, the peak demand was 1.88 lakh MW. Along with this, the production of electricity is also increasing. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), electricity generation was 115.50 billion units in December last year, compared to 108.44 billion units in November last year.
