The 'Bharat Bandh' of farmers is on Tuesday, December 8, but the political stir has started a day before.
In Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh Police is monitoring the activities of the Samajwadi Party. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had said on Sunday that 'they accept the demands of the farmers and they will support the Bharat Bandh called by the farmers'. But on Monday morning, UP police camped outside their house.
Farmers of Punjab and Haryana have been demonstrating against the agricultural laws of the Modi government for the past 12 days. Farmers have camped on the borders of Delhi. Also, farmers' demonstrations continue in many districts of the country.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the Singhu Border on Monday, where the largest camp of protesting farmers is at this time. He reiterated that 'Aam Aadmi Party is with the farmers'.
The central government had appealed to the farmers not to call for such a bandh and send children and old people home from the protest sites. The government appealed to the farmers keeping in mind the Covid-19 epidemic.
But the farmers have called for the Bharat Bandh of 8 December, rejecting this appeal of the government. Farmers want the central government to withdraw all three new agricultural laws. Farmers say that due to this new law, they will have to sell their grain at little to no cost, and the minimum support price system will end.
Negotiations are going on between the central government and the farmers' organizations about this. There has been a five-stage dialogue which has remained fruitless till now. On Wednesday, December 9, that is, the same day of the Bharat Bandh, the sixth phase of the talks will be held between the government and farmers organizations.
It is believed that the central government is under pressure from the performance of the farmers. The statements of some Union ministers involved in talks with farmers have indicated that the government may back down.
Meanwhile, not only the main opposition parties but also some allies of BJP have supported the demands of the farmers. They have said that they will remain in support of Bharat Bandh on Tuesday.
Keeping in mind the Bharat Bandh, Haryana Police and Delhi Police have made preparations to deploy additional police forces on the Singhu border and Tikari border, which have been the biggest centers of protest till now.
So far, 18 political parties have said that they are in support of the Bharat Bandh of farmers.
On Monday morning, BSP supremo Mayawati said, "Farmers are agitated all over the country for the withdrawal of three new laws related to agriculture. BSP supports the Bharat Bandh which they announced on 8 December. Also from the central government Appeals that he should listen to the demands of the farmers. "
Earlier, Shiv Sena announced its support for Bharat Bandh. Party Spokesperson Sanjay Raut had said that 'as our moral responsibility towards farmers, the people of the country should voluntarily participate in the farmers' bandh'.
Earlier, 11 big political leaders of India including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, DMK Chief MK Stalin, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Sitaram Yechury of the Left Front, and D Raja spoke of support for farmers' Bharat Bandh was.
Issuing a joint statement, 11 political parties in India said that the Modi government passed these laws in Parliament in a 'non-democratic way' which was not discussed.
These parties have claimed in their statement that this will aggravate the food crisis in India, worsen the conditions of the farmers, as well as the condition of the Indian agricultural sector, which will deteriorate due to the non-availability of minimum support price (MSP).
At the same time, Shiv Sena, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Akali Dal, Aam Aadmi Party and BJP's allies - Assam Gana Parishad and National Democratic Party have also supported farmers' Bharat Bandh. However, the joint statement is not signed by the leaders of these parties.
On Sunday, Minister Gopal Rai in the Delhi government had said that Aam Aadmi Party convenor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has asked party workers and officials to support the Bharat Bandh on December 8 under the leadership of farmers.
The Congress has said that on December 8, the party will protest in every district of India. Former party president Rahul Gandhi has also supported the demands of the farmers and said that the Modi government should accept the demands of the farmers.
The farmers' movement started on 26 November. The central government understands that the farmers have been misled by the new agricultural laws and the government has been saying that 'all the illusions' of the farmers can be removed by negotiation.
On Saturday, about five hours long talks were held at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi. In this meeting, the government assured the farmers that "the agricultural laws will not affect the MSP, it is a state subject and the central government will not affect the mandis of the states in any way."
But the farmers have said that the program of Bharat Bandh will remain as per the plan.
Ten central trade unions of the country have also supported this bandh.
The farmers have said that during Bharat Bandh they will block all the roads going to Delhi. All toll plazas will be stopped and demonstrations will be held there.
The Left parties not only supported this bandh but also appealed to other opposition parties to support it.
The CPI, CPI (M), CPM (M-L), and All India Forward Bloc have said in a joint statement to support the Kisan movement.
Indian National Trade Union, All India Trade Union Congress, Hind Mazdoor Sabha, Center of Indian Trade Unions, All India United Trade Union Center, and Trade Union Co-ordination Center have also supported the peasant movement and the Bharat Bandh called by farmers.
Demonstrations are also expected to be held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana on the day of Bharat Bandh. Farmers on the Delhi border (Singhu border and Ghazipur) have appealed to the farmers of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to come to their support. He has said that everyone should surround Delhi and help them seal the boundaries of Delhi.
