Four months of violence in Manipur: 175 killed, over 1100 injured; Miscreants set fire to 4,786 houses

Violence has been going on in Manipur for four months. At least 175 people have been killed in the caste violence that broke out on May 3. At the same time, more than one thousand people have been injured.

Muivah said that caste violence had broken out in early May. At least 175 people have been killed since then, with nine still missing. At the same time, 1,108 were injured, while about 32 people are missing.

 

Of the missing weapons, 1,359 firearms and 15,050 rounds of ammunition have been recovered, the official said on Thursday. Let us tell you, during the violence, the rioters had allegedly looted a large number of weapons and ammunition from the police. Muivah said that the miscreants had set a total of 4,786 houses on fire. At least 5,172 cases of arson have been recorded. He also said that 254 churches and 132 temples were also demolished during the violence.

 

The IGP said security barricades have been removed from Fougachao Ikhai in Bishnupur district to Kangwai in Churachandpur district. At the same time, security has been increased on national highways. He said that 69 dead bodies have been identified. The remaining 96 bodies have not been claimed. 28 and 26 bodies are kept at RIMS and JNIMS respectively, while 42 are at Churachandpur hospital.

 

Jayant said that so far 9,332 cases have been registered in connection with the violence. At the same time, 325 people have been arrested.

It is noteworthy that the clashes started after the organization of 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts on May 3 in protest against the demand of giving Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community. At least 160 people have lost their lives in the state since then. Hundreds of people have lost their lives in the violence and thousands have been displaced.
