Many cases of slow overrate are coming to the fore in IPL 2025. In the latest case, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has had to face punishment for this. In fact, after losing the match against Gujarat Titans, Samson has suffered another setback. The BCCI has imposed a fine of Rs 24 lakh on him for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match. Gujarat had defeated Rajasthan by 58 runs in this match. Batting first in the match played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat scored 217 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Rajasthan's team was bundled out for 159 runs in 19.2 overs. Sai Sudarshan was adjudged the Player of the Match.
Apart from Samson, other players also fined
In a release issued by the IPL, it was said, 'Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been fined as his team maintained slow over-rate during match number 23 of IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. As this was his team's second offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offenses, Samson was fined Rs 24 lakh. The statement also said, 'The rest of the playing XI members, including the impact player, will be fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is less.'
Parag was fined before Samson.
Before Samson, Riyan Parag was also fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over rate. Parag played the role of acting captain in all three of Rajasthan's opening matches. Samson was injured then. Gujarat's team is at the top of the points table with four wins and one loss in five matches, while Rajasthan Royals are at the seventh position with two wins and three losses in five matches.
Five captains fined
This is the fifth time in the 23 matches played so far this year that a team captain has been fined for slow over-rate. The BCCI had relaxed the rules before the start of the season. The provision of banning the captains was removed. After that, at the beginning of this season, Mumbai captain Hardik, Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant and Rajasthan Royals acting captain Riyan Parag and RCB captain Rajat Patidar have been fined Rs 12 lakh each for slows over rate.
Hardik made a mistake last season.
Hardik was suspended for one match for a slow over rate violation during the team's last match last season. Due to this, he could not play the first match of IPL 2025. However, the BCCI has now removed the suspension rule and will only work with the fine. Before the start of this season, the IPL Governing Council had a meeting with the captains and decided to remove the ban rule. It was agreed in the meeting that captains would be given demerit points and fined for slow over rate. The ban will be imposed only in serious cases.
Captains will get demerit points.
According to a Cricbuzz report, the captain will be penalized with demerit points but will not face a match ban for slow over-rate. A Level 1 offense will see a deduction of 25 to 75 percent of the match fee along with demerit points, which will be calculated for the next three years. A Level 2 offense will carry four demerit points if deemed serious. It further states that, for every 4 demerit points, the match referee can impose a penalty in the form of a 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. These demerit points can lead to a future match ban, but a match ban for slow over-rate will not be imposed (immediately).
