Raj Thackeray's party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), is once again in controversy, and this time, a party worker beat up a Rajasthani man because of his WhatsApp status.
The case is from the Vikhroli area of Mumbai, where MNS workers beat up a Rajasthani shopkeeper, considering his WhatsApp status as derogatory against the Marathi community, and also forced him to apologize publicly.
Parade on the road
MNS workers not only beat up the shopkeeper, but also paraded him on the road in public and later handed him over to the police. It is alleged that the shopkeeper had posted an objectionable status on WhatsApp.
As soon as the shopkeeper's status went viral, MNS workers got angry and they caught hold of the shopkeeper and beat him up. Along with this, MNS workers also paraded the shopkeeper on the road.
What is the controversy?
There has been a controversy going on in Maharashtra for some time regarding Hindi and Marathi language. The Maharashtra government had issued an order to make Hindi compulsory as the third language in schools.
However, later this order was changed to make Hindi the third language in general, in which the option of selecting any other language was allowed if 20 students agreed.
Opposition parties protested
Opposition parties, especially Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's party, MNS, called this decision an attempt to impose Hindi and strongly opposed it. Since then, cases related to language dispute are coming to the fore in Maharashtra.
