From today, only vehicles complying with BS-6 emission standards are allowed entry into Delhi. Amidst news of a ban on dispensing fuel at petrol pumps without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, long queues formed at petrol pumps from Wednesday morning as people rushed to get their PUC certificates. Meanwhile, this has elicited mixed reactions from the public.
The impact of the Delhi government's decision was visible at several major petrol pumps, including those in Connaught Place, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Janpath, Barakhamba, and Dhaula Kuan. People arrived early in the morning to get their vehicles' pollution checks done so they could comply with the new rules that came into effect on Thursday.
It is worth noting that at several petrol pumps, the PUC testing was halted due to server issues, and many people returned disappointed after waiting for hours. Vehicle owners want to comply with the rules, but systemic shortcomings are posing a major challenge for them.
Dinesh Kumar, a motorcycle rider, said, "My PUC was expiring on December 20th, but I got it renewed two days earlier. Only if people do this will pollution decrease. It is very important. Many people are falling ill due to pollution, and I am also suffering from a cough. Therefore, PUC for vehicles is very necessary."
From today, vehicles without a PUC certificate are banned from receiving fuel at petrol pumps in Delhi. Regarding this, Veer Jain, an employee of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), said, "According to the orders received from the Delhi government, vehicles without a PUC certificate will not be given fuel. We have to check the documents of all vehicles and instruct petrol pump employees not to provide fuel to defaulting vehicles. This order will remain in effect until further notice."
Some vehicle owners expressed their frustration.
Divyansh, a motorcycle rider, said, "I need to get a PUC certificate, but the server is down. The server is sometimes working, sometimes not. I have been visiting several petrol pumps for the last 10 days. But, due to the new model, I am unable to get a PUC certificate for my BS-6 vehicle. If the government has made rules, then the system should also be in order."
