Indian team's experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was not aware of the team's former off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's decision to retire from international cricket. Jadeja says that he got the news of Ashwin's retirement only five minutes before. Jadeja said that he and Ashwin were sitting together on the last day of the third Test, but this spinner did not give him the slightest indication that he was going to retire.
Ashwin retired from international cricket after the third Test match played against Australia in Brisbane. The Indian team took part in the first practice in Melbourne. During this, Jadeja held a press conference and gave his opinion on Ashwin's retirement.
Jadeja said I came to know about this only in the last minutes. Just before Ashwin held the press conference, maybe five minutes before, someone told me that Ashwin was going to retire. I was surprised because we were sitting together all day. He did not even give me a hint and I came to know at the end. Yes, we all know about Ashwin's mind and how he works.
Jadeja said - the team has to move forward.
Ashwin's retirement shocked the cricket world, but Jadeja believes that the team has to move forward and ensure that any young player who replaces Ashwin gets maximum experience. Jadeja said we have to move forward. It is not the case in India that there is no option for any player. Everyone knows that someone will come after him who will replace him. This is a good opportunity for the youngsters coming into the team to prove themselves at this level.
Three spinners got a chance in three Tests.
India gave three different spinners a chance in the first three Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Washington Sundar played as the only spinner in the Perth Test, while Ashwin got a place in the playing-11 in the Pink Ball Test played in Adelaide. After this, Jadeja was given a chance in place of Ashwin in the third Test. On his return to the team, Jadeja performed well in the Gabba Test and scored 77 runs in the first innings.
Jadeja said, I did not get a chance to play in the first two Test matches, but this gave me a chance to practice and get used to these conditions. I kept understanding the conditions throughout and batted and bowled on these pitches. This gave me a chance to get used to these conditions. Due to the hard work done in the nets, I was able to perform in the match.
