Indian Test team captain Shubman Gill has termed the strategy of deliberately wasting time by England's openers on the third day of the Lord's Test as 'against the spirit of the game'. Gill said that the England batsmen reached the crease 90 seconds late, which is not in the decorum of any game.
Gill spoke openly on this issue in a press conference held on the eve of the fourth Test match in Manchester. The English media were constantly raising questions on the heated atmosphere and aggression between the two teams during the third Test. Gill said in clear words, yes, many people are discussing this, so I want to make it clear once that the England batsmen had seven minutes of play left that day and they came to the crease 90 seconds late.
It was not a matter of 10-20 seconds.
Gill said, "It is not a matter of 10 or 20 seconds, it is a matter of 90 seconds. Every team manages time according to the circumstances, we also do it, but there is a way to do it. If someone gets hit by the ball and the physio comes, then it is justified, but deliberately delaying for 90 seconds is not in the spirit of the game."
Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly in the final over on the third day of the Lord's Test and also took a dig at Jack Crowley by clapping for his delay. The Indian players also had a heated conversation with Ben Duckett and other players on the field. Gill recalled the feelings of that moment and said, We saw many things that should not have happened. We did not do anything intentionally, but when such things are happening in front of us, sometimes emotions come out automatically. When you enter a game, the feeling of winning is paramount, and in such a situation, if someone crosses the limits, then it is natural to respond."
Pant will do wicketkeeping.
The Indian captain confirmed that Rishabh Pant will do wicketkeeping in the fourth Test. Due to injury, Pant played the role of wicketkeeper for only 35 overs in the third Test, Dhruv Jurel took over this responsibility in the rest of the match. Jurel's performance behind the wicket was disappointing, however. He gave 25 byes and England won the match by 22 runs.
India needs victory
Team India will go into the fourth match to win, and if it has to win the series, then it will need a win at all costs. Even if this match is drawn, then the series will go out of India's hands. At present, England is leading 2-1 in the five-match series. If the fourth match remains a draw and India wins the last match, then the series will end in a 2-2 draw.
