The bitterness of relations between India and Pakistan was also seen on the cricket field when Indian players did not shake hands with the players of the arch-rival team during the Asia Cup match. India defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in the match played in Dubai on Sunday. Indian players did not pay attention to Pakistani players during the entire match, and after the match was over, captain Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dubey returned straight to the pavilion.
Indian players not shaking hands with Pakistani players is now becoming a big controversy. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is also furious after getting a defeat from India and has demanded the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft, blaming him for not shaking hands. Indian captain Suryakumar had supported this stand of the team and dedicated the victory to the armed forces after the match, and showed solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam attack.
Mohsin Naqvi expressed displeasure.
Earlier on Monday, PCB President Mohsin Naqvi also reacted to India's boycott. He called it a 'lack of sportsmanship' and said that India has dragged politics into the game. Naqvi wrote, 'After the India-Pakistan match, there was a severe lack of sportsmanship. Bringing politics into the game is against the spirit of the game. Hopefully, in the future, all the teams will celebrate victory with dignity.'
PCB complained to ACC
PCB did not stop here and expressed displeasure over the entire incident and complained to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and has now sought ICC's intervention. The ACC is headed by PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, while the ICC President is India's Jay Shah. The Asia Cup is not an ICC tournament but an ACC tournament. The PCB had earlier said that Pycroft had told Pakistani captain Salman Ali Agha at the time of the toss not to shake hands with the Indian captain. Pakistani team manager Naveed Cheema has filed a complaint with the ACC alleging that the two captains did not exchange team sheets at the behest of Pycroft.
BCCI did not respond to PCB's statement
BCCI has not yet responded to PCB's statement, but according to news agency PTI, if India reaches the final on September 28, the players will not share the stage with Naqvi. Naqvi, being the ACC chief, can give the trophy to the winning team. Neither team talked to the other, even during the toss and warm-up. Both the captains had handed over the team sheet to the match referee.
If there is a match with Pakistan again, will India's stand remain intact?
It is understood that BCCI and the team management had discussed their stand among themselves, as there was a lot of opposition in India from opposition parties to social media against playing the match. Opposing the decision to play the match, it was being said that money is being placed above the emotions of the families who lost their loved ones in the Pahalgam terrorist attack. It is also understood that the decision of not shaking hands is a policy decision, and if there is a match with Pakistan again in the Super 4 stage next Sunday, it will be repeated. Both teams can also clash in the final on 28 September.
