The Indian team suffered a 76-run defeat at the hands of South Africa in their first Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026. Chasing a target of 188 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Indian team was all out for 111 runs in 18.5 overs.
Five players from defending champion India failed to reach double figures in the match. Shivam Dubey played a fighting innings of 42 runs off 37 balls. 1. Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek Sharma was once again ineffective in the Super 8 match against South Africa. Abhishek, who had returned to the pavilion for a duck in the previous three innings, did open his account in this match, but was dismissed for 15 runs off 12 balls. Jansen had him caught by Corbin Bosch in the fifth over.
2. Ishan Kishan
Everyone expected wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan to make a strong start in the Super 8 match against South Africa, but he failed to even open his account. Ishan was dismissed for a duck after playing four balls, dealing a major blow to the Indian team early. Ishan was caught by Ryan Rickelton off South African captain Aiden Markram in the first over.
3. Washington Sundar
Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar also disappointed in the Super 8 match. Coming in to bat at number five, Sundar scored only 11 runs off 11 balls, hitting one six. Sundar was preferred over Axar Patel, but he failed to live up to expectations. He bowled two overs but went wicketless, conceding 17 runs.
4. Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya also struggled in the Super 8 match against South Africa. He struggled with both the bat and the ball. He conceded 45 runs in his 4-over spell and failed to achieve any success. Meanwhile, Hardik scored 18 runs in 17 balls, including one six.
5. Varun Chakravarthy
Varun Chakravarthy proved to be extremely lack in the Super 8. He was the most expensive bowler, bowling 4 overs and conceding a total of 47 runs. His only wicket was that of David Miller.
