India and Sri Lanka agree to intensify bilateral military exercises, review defense cooperation

India and Sri Lanka agreed to intensify bilateral military exercises. Along with this, resolved to benefit from each other's experiences and capabilities. This agreement has been made at a time when China is trying to increase its influence in the Indian Ocean. The two sides reviewed defense and security cooperation at the seventh India-Sri Lanka Annual Defense Dialogue held in Delhi.

 

The activities of ongoing defense cooperation in both countries were reviewed.

According to the Ministry of Defence, during this meeting the ongoing defense cooperation activities in both countries were reviewed. Concerning training, both sides reiterated their commitment to derive maximum benefit from each other's experiences and capabilities, according to the statement issued. The dialogue was co-chaired by India's Defense Secretary Giridhar Armane and his Sri Lankan counterpart General Kamal Gunaratne.

The ministry said that the armed forces of both countries want to continue bilateral cooperation in various fields. The enhanced connectivity between the two is a positive sign for future bilateral relations. The Indian delegation involved in the annual dialogue with Sri Lanka included officers from the Headquarters Integrated Defense Staff, officers from the tri-services headquarters, and representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs. The Sri Lankan delegation included Air Marshal SK Pathirana, Commander of the Sri Lankan Air Force, and other senior officials.
