External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said it is in the mutual interest of both India and China to find a way to accommodate each other. If they fail to do so, it will affect the rise of Asia, which is dependent on the continent's largest economies coming together. Jaishankar, who is here to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, discussed the border standoff during talks with Arvind Panagariya, a university professor and former NITI Aayog vice-chairman at the Raj Center of the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University here. He made this remark while answering a question on the rise between India and China.
Jaishankar said, 'In our times, the biggest change we have seen in the world is the rise of China.' At the same time, China has progressed more dramatically than India, he said. The External Affairs Minister further said, 'The issue for us today is how the two emerging powers, in perfect proximity to each other, harmonize with each other in a dynamic situation.' To a question about whether China can open a consulate in Chennai, Jaishankar said, "India's relations with China are not normal at this time."
Jaishankar said that India not being a permanent member of the UN Security Council is not only not good for us, but it is also not good for the global body. He said the expansion of the Security Council was a long-awaited one. He was replying to a question that asked how long would it take for India to become a member of the Security Council. He said that in the coming few years, India will be the world's third-largest economy as well as the most populous country. It would not be good for anyone to not have such a country in the global council.
