Recently, Chief Selector Ajit Agrakar revealed the reason behind this decision. He asked why Surya was chosen as the captain instead of Hardik.

This question was asked in Gautam Gambhir's first press conference as the Indian head coach. During this, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar said,

 

'The captain should be the one who has played the maximum number of matches. That's why Suryakumar was made the captain. As far as Hardik is concerned, he is an important player on our team. His fitness has been a problem. We want him to perform well. We want him to do well. Suryakumar had the necessary abilities for captaincy.''

 

Agarkar further said that there are still two years left. We feel that during this time we can manage Hardik well. If someone's role changes then we talk.
