Harpreet Singh Lalia, a resident of Nagpur in Maharashtra and one of the 104 Indians deported from the US has narrated his painful story. He has claimed that he has been sent back in a humiliating manner with handcuffs on his hands and chains on his feet. Lalia said that he had planned to go to Canada, but the mistake of his agent shattered his dream. He also told me that I had raised Rs 50 lakh from banks and relatives, which was collected to go to America. Apart from this, I had to travel hard to reach America and had to face uncertainty at every step.
In fact, on Wednesday, the US Army's C-17 Globemaster aircraft carrying 104 illegal immigrants landed at Amritsar airport. These include 33-33 from Haryana and Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, three each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh and two from Chandigarh.
Lalia told reporters, 'I went on a Canadian visa. I started my journey from New Delhi on December 5, 2024. I had a connecting flight from Abu Dhabi the next day, but I was not allowed to board it, after which I returned to Delhi and stayed there for eight days. I was then put on a flight to Cairo in Egypt, from where I had to go to Montreal in Canada via Spain. After staying in Spain for four days, I was sent to Guatemala, then from there to Nicaragua, further to Honduras and Mexico, and then to the US border.'
Laliya claimed that I spent a total of Rs 49.5 lakh. This money was taken as a loan from banks and from friends and relatives. I went on a Canadian visa and wanted to work in that country. However, I had to suffer due to the mistake of my agent.
He told reporters that he faced many difficulties during the journey. He was captured by mafias in Mexico and held hostage for 10 days. After this, he had to climb a hill for hours. Then he also had to make a difficult 16-hour walk to the US border. Lalia said he and 103 others were taken to a reception center and then put on a US plane in handcuffs and leg shackles.
