Tahawwur Rana, accused of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has been extradited from the US to India. Rana played an important role in plotting the Mumbai attacks along with David Headley.
The US Department of Justice has said that after the attacks, Rana had allegedly said to Headley while talking to him that Indians deserve this. The Department of Justice said that the extradition of Tahawwur Rana is a big step towards justice for the 6 Americans and others killed in the attacks.
Headley had done recce in Mumbai.
Tahawwur Rana is a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin. He was earlier a medical assistant in the Pakistani army. Later he went to Canada and tried his hand in many businesses like slaughter house and law firm there. David Headley was his childhood friend.
David Headley had come to India before the bomb blasts in Mumbai and had done recce at many places. Headley is an American citizen of Pakistani origin. Tahawwur Rana had sent Headley to India citing the reason for opening a branch office in Mumbai for his immigration business.
He had talked about giving him a bravery award.
David Headley's real name is Dawood Gilani. He is serving a 35-year sentence in a US jail. It is alleged that Tahawwur Rana had met him several times in Chicago. The US Justice Department said in a statement that in a conversation with Headley, Rana allegedly praised the nine Lashkar terrorists who were killed in the attack.
Rana had said that they should be given Nishan-e-Haider, which is Pakistan's highest award for bravery in war. It is given to martyred soldiers. Let us tell you that out of the 10 terrorists who entered India for the attack, 9 were killed and one terrorist Ajmal Kasab was caught alive.
