India-US: India-US discussed ways to deal with terrorism, stressed concrete action against terrorist organizations

India and the US discussed measures towards disrupting the ability of terrorists to travel internationally. They called on all countries to take immediate irreversible steps to ensure that no territory under their control is used for terrorist attacks.

 

Exchanged views on threats posed by terrorist organizations

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two sides also exchanged views on the threats posed by terrorist organizations designated by the United Nations and Al-Qaeda, ISIS/Daesh, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Al Stressed the need for concerted action against terrorist organizations like Badar.

 

The Ministry of External Affairs issued this statement after the 19th meeting of the India-US Counter Terrorism Joint Working Group and the fifth session of the 'India-US Designations Dialogue'. Both these programs took place in Delhi on 12-13 December.

 

Strongly condemns all forms of international terrorism

In an indirect reference to Pakistan, the Ministry of External Affairs said that both sides strongly condemn the use of terrorist proxies, cross-border terrorism, and international terrorism in all its forms. He spoke of bringing the main conspirators of the 26/11 Mumbai and Pathankot attacks to justice. Both sides reaffirmed their deep strategic partnership to advance security and prosperity for both countries and reiterated that terrorism remains a serious threat to international peace and security.

 

The Ministry of External Affairs said that India and the US called on all countries to take immediate, sustained, and irreversible action to ensure that no territory under their control is used for terrorist attacks. The ministry said they also shared information on their priorities and processes for pursuing sanctions against terrorist groups and individuals.

 

Emphasis on counter-terrorism challenges

The Ministry of External Affairs said the two sides also discussed measures to combat terrorist financing, prevent and counter-radicalization, use of the Internet for terrorist purposes, narco-trafficking and its links with terrorism and other activities such as Unmanned Aerial Systems, Virtual Assets, and the Dark Web. The emphasis on counter-terrorism challenges, including the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes, was also discussed.

 

Both sides discussed mutual legal and extradition assistance, law enforcement training, and capacity-building cooperation. The State Department said the US appreciated India's leadership in global efforts to counter terrorism and its recent hosting of a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Counter-Terrorism Committee.
