A court here on Wednesday refused to send Bangladeshi national Mohammad Shariful Islam, arrested for allegedly attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan with a knife, to police custody and sent him to judicial custody.

The court found that there was no new ground to extend his police custody. After considering the application by the police seeking further custody, the Bandra Magistrate Court said that no new ground has been made for it. Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Komal Singh Rajput said, "Further police custody is not justified at least at this stage."
Mohammad Shariful Islam was produced before the Bandra Magistrate Court after the end of police custody. Citing the provisions of the Indian Justice Code, the court told the investigating officer that if there is any new development, the police can again seek the custody of the accused for the remaining period within the stipulated time.
According to the new criminal laws, the police can seek custody of a person for up to 15 days. This can be continuous or at intervals during a period of 40 or 60 days from the arrest depending on the severity of the crime. Let us tell you that on January 19, Mumbai Police arrested the accused who attacked Saif Ali Khan.
