Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals on Wednesday in IPL 2025 to confirm their place in the playoffs. Along with the defeat, a Delhi player has been fined heavily for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. Delhi fast bowler Mukesh Kumar was fined 10 per cent of his match fee.

Mukesh was also given a demerit point for a Level 1 violation under Article 2.2 which relates to misuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during the match. Delhi Capitals were knocked out of the playoff race after losing to Mumbai Indians by 59 runs at Wankhede on Wednesday. Mumbai Indians became the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs with this win. Earlier, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings have qualified.

An IPL release said, 'Mukesh Kumar has accepted the Level 1 violation of Article 2.2 and the match referee's fine.' According to this, 'The decision of the match referee is valid for a level one violation of the code of conduct.' Mukesh conceded 48 runs in his four overs on Wednesday and took two wickets. His last over yielded 27 runs with three sixes and two fours.

'Delhi Capitals' concern was about the opening pair'

Earlier, after Delhi's defeat, head coach Hemang Badani said that not being able to find an opening pair throughout the season was one of the reasons for the team's failure. Delhi Capitals tried seven opening pairs in 13 matches, but did not get much success and now the team will face Punjab Kings in its last match on Saturday.

Badani said, 'A good opening pair is found only when it gives you a good start. If you do not get a start, then you have to make changes to fill that gap. If you see other teams who have made a great start and performed brilliantly with the bat in the powerplay. But we could not get that start and that's why we had to make those changes.'

Badani said, 'We had Jack (Fraser-McGurk) earlier but it did not work for us. Abhishek (Poral), had Faf (Duplessis), then Karun (Nair) as well. It's just that we did not have anyone who could give us a good start. Opening the innings at the top was a matter of concern for us and I think this is one of the reasons why we could not move forward.'
