US President Donald Trump is surrounded in his own country over tariffs. His own party's Republican leader, Nikki Haley, has called the tariffs imposed on India extremely wrong and worrying. Haley has called the rift in the partnership between India and America a "big mistake" on the part of Washington.
Trump and PM Modi should meet
Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that America's top priority should be to bring India-US relations back on track, and she also called for a direct meeting between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
China will come closer to India
In an article published in Newsweek on Wednesday, Nikki Haley warned that any rift in India-US relations will give China an opportunity to come closer to India and push Washington away. Nikki further said that both countries will have to come together to face China.
India's progress is in America's interest...
Nikki Haley said that the partnership between America and India should not be a big deal to face China. Helping India stand strong against its neighbours both economically and militarily will serve America's interests.
India should find a solution to the Russian oil issue: Nikki Haley
Haley also urged India to take Trump's statement on Russian oil seriously and work with the White House to find a solution. Trump has imposed a 25 per cent tariff on India for buying Russian oil, which is in addition to the 25 per cent duty already imposed on imports of Indian goods.
She said the US should also focus on resolving differences with India and improving relations.
Haley wrote, "The most important priority should be to reduce the rift between the two countries, for which direct talks between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be necessary. The sooner the better."
