Israel War: The Israeli army entered southern Gaza City, hospitals full of dead and injured; the UN Chief took a big step

Israeli soldiers reached the center of Khan Younis city in southern Gaza on Wednesday and fought a hand-to-hand battle with Hamas. Despite not having a safe area, Palestinian citizens were forced to flee elsewhere. This two-month-long struggle, which started on October 7, reached its heaviest phase on Wednesday. Here Israeli warplanes bombed the targets in the densely populated coastal area.

 

The effect of this fighting was that hospitals were filled with dead and injured. Most of them are women and children. Palestinian doctors said hospitals were running out of medical supplies. Common citizens are searching for shelter but have to live on the streets. The Israeli army advanced toward the southern city with tanks on Wednesday surrounded the city of Khan Yunis and started firing. He attacked hundreds of targets, including a terrorist cell near a school. Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said Wednesday's fighting was fierce and left an unknown number of people dead and wounded. Israeli tanks, he said, were deployed on the edge of the Khan Yunis refugee camp.

 

United Nations Secretary-General invoked Article 99

Amid the conflict in Gaza, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday took a major step by invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter and formally referred the situation in Gaza to the UN Security Council. The UN chief has urged the Security Council to stop the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. According to media reports, Guterres has sent a letter to the President of the UNSC, in which he said that the conflict has caused catastrophic human suffering and human destruction in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory. The UN chief has also highlighted the plight of the citizens of Gaza, who are facing grave danger. Guterres has alleged that there is no effective protection for civilians in Gaza and no one is safe.

Hamdi Tanira, a Palestinian civilian who fled from a house during the bombing, said, I was lucky to escape. 30 people including 20 children were sleeping in that house. Hardly anyone is left among them. Amal Mehdi, another survivor, said it was a miracle that we were pulled from the debris. Dr. Al-Ahad of Nasser Hospital said, I have never seen such a scene, there is no place to store dead bodies, and treatment is difficult.

 

Aid supplies were badly affected

Aid supplies to southern Gaza have been badly hit in the latest conflict. The UN humanitarian aid office said, in the last three days, flour and drinking water could only be delivered to areas near Rafah on Egypt's southern border because Israeli forces have closed the roads. Fuel-medical supplies at Al-Aqsa Hospital have reached 'minimum levels'.

 

Israeli army regrets

In a rare apology, the Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday expressed regret over an unintentional attack. A Lebanese soldier was killed in this, while it targeted a post belonging to Hezbollah.
