It is about February 1999, when the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee was on a tour of Pakistan. He was accompanied by 20-25 people, including actors Devanand, Kapil Dev, and Javed Akhtar.

 

Vajpayee boarded a bus, crossed the Wagah border and reached Lahore, and warmly embraced Nawaz Sharif, the then Prime Minister of Pakistan. But Pakistan was doing that cowardly act behind its back, which Vajpayee came to know after 4 months.

 

Nawaz Sharif was chanting peace along with Vajpayee in front of the world and at the same time the Pakistan Army was occupying the Indian land in Kargil, Ladakh, Jammu, and Kashmir. When India came to know about this, it was told by Pakistani officials that Wazir-e-Azam Nawaz Sharif was aware of whatever happened in Kargil. But Sharif denied that he had any knowledge of this.

In his official biography 'Gaddar Kaun? In the book Nawaz Sharif's Story, Unki Jubani', Nawaz Sharif mentioned Vajpayee's phone call during the Kargil war, due to which Pakistan's Wazir-e-Azam himself was shaken. The 500-page book is based on the personal and political life of Nawaz Sharif and has been authored by senior Pakistani journalist Suhail Waraich. In this book, for the first time, the former Prime Minister has made many big revelations about his childhood, his political career, and the Kargil issue.

Atalji came to know about Pakistani infiltration in Kargil in May 1999. He immediately called Nawaz Sharif and angrily said, 'Nawaz Saheb, what have you done? We talked in such a good atmosphere and as soon as I returned, your army attacked us. In response, Nawaz told Atal ji that I do not know anything about this. According to the book by Suhail Waraich, Sharif claimed that the then army chief Pervez Musharraf had waged the Kargil war against India without his approval and that he came to know about this misadventure through Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Was.

 

'Nawaz Saab has backstabbed'

Atal Ji was upset seeing the Pakistani leader moving fast in the Kargil war. During a telephonic conversation, Atal ji had said, 'Nawaz saab, he was stabbed in the back in February 1999 after being given a 21-gun salute in Lahore.

 

It was Pervez Musharraf who sent the Pakistani army to Kargil in the name of Mujahideen. Following the leak of conversations between Musharraf and the Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Muhammad Aziz Khan, on 26 and 29 May, Vajpayee sent a letter to the then US President Bill Clinton.

 

After this letter, the pressure increased and the retreat of the Pakistani army started. India threatened America through the mail that if Pakistan does not call back its army then India will also have to counterattack.

 

Sharif immediately contacted Clinton

Amid the Kargil war tension, Sharif contacted Clinton and told her that he wanted to meet her. The US President agreed to welcome him in Washington. During the three-hour meeting, Clinton telephoned Vajpayee. Clinton suggested to Vajpayee that Pakistan was prepared to call a ceasefire in Kargil if India agreed to resolve the Kashmir issue.

 

Vajpayee then told that he had told Sharif during his visit to Pakistan that he wanted to resolve the Kashmir issue in 1999 but that was before the attack in Kargil. After this Kargil war which lasted for 74 days, after the mediation of Clinton, Pakistan had to withdraw its army.
