Indian Army mountaineers have successfully rescued a hungry and thirsty injured trekker who was trapped for nearly 48 hours in the crevices of a steep hill in Kerala.
R Babu, 23, slipped and fell into a gorge while trekking along with three friends on Monday. On Wednesday morning, the Indian Army contacted him and pulled him out.
According to the news website Manorama, "Army personnel carrying out the rescue operation reached R Babu and gave him water and food, a member of the rescue team gave him safety equipment and took him out of the rift to the top of the hill. ''
48 hours in the crevice of the hill
The 1,000 feet (305 m) Kurumbachi in Kerala's Palakkad district is known for its steep hillside terrain and the state forest department had earlier warned trekkers about the risk of climbing the hill.
According to the report, when R Babu fell and got stuck in the crevices of the hills on Monday, he only had a place to sit.
At first, his friends tried to drag him using sticks and ropes but without being successful, he went down the hill to seek help from the police.
During this, R Babu sent pictures and selfies of the spot to help in locating them.
R Babu stayed in this rift for 48 hours. Finally, on Wednesday, the army approached him and pulled him out of the rift.
Drones were used by the rescue team to ensure their safety.
On Tuesday, Coast Guard helicopters made several flights to reach him, but could not get out of R Babu due to the topography of the area.
An official involved in the operation told the Hindustan Times newspaper that on Tuesday night, the authorities kept bonfires lit near the hill to keep the wild animals away.
After this, a team of the Indian Army was mobilized after the state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan requested help.
The army finally established contact with R Babu on Wednesday morning and told him, "We have reached, you don't worry."
