There is anger across the country even today over the horrific incident that happened with the female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Junior doctors are on the streets demanding justice and workplace safety. These people have been on hunger strike for several days to get their demands fulfilled. In such a situation, now the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It urged to solve the problems of the junior doctors sitting on hunger strike.
The IMA said, 'It has been about a week since the young doctors started the hunger strike, and their demand needs 'immediate attention'. We support their legitimate demands.'
'Peaceful environment and security are not a luxury'
The Indian Medical Association further said, 'The government is fully capable of fulfilling all the demands. A peaceful environment and security are not a luxury. It is a necessary thing. We appeal to you that as the head of the government, you should solve the problems of the young generation of doctors. The entire medical fraternity of India is worried. But, we are confident that you will be able to save their lives. If IMA can help in any way, we will do it happily.'
Meetings have been held earlier.
Junior doctors of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital are protesting against the recent incident of alleged rape and murder of a colleague. Their indefinite hunger strike is about to be completed in a week. Earlier, West Bengal government officials held a meeting with the doctors late on Wednesday night to end their strike. However, this meeting remained inconclusive and no solution could be found. After the two-hour meeting late at night, the protesting doctors alleged that they did not get anything concrete from the state government except verbal assurances. The state government refused to give written instructions on the demands of ensuring 'complete cleanliness' of the healthcare system and increasing security in the medical college.
These people are on indefinite hunger strike.
Let us tell you that Aniket Mahato of RG Kar Hospital, Snigdha Hazra, Tanaya Panja and Anustup Mukhopadhyay of Kolkata Medical College, Arnab Mukhopadhyay of SSKM Hospital, Pulastha Acharya of NRS Medical College and Sayantani Ghosh Hazra of KPC Medical College are on hunger strike. To support them, two other junior doctors of Cooch Behar Medical College are also on hunger strike.
It is worth noting that the junior doctors announced a complete strike last Friday. This affected health services in state-run medical colleges and hospitals. The protesting doctors stressed that getting justice for the victim doctor is their priority. They also called for the immediate removal of Health Secretary NS Nigam as well as fixing accountability.
