Eminent botanist and Padma Shri awardee KS Manilal died on Wednesday due to age-related ailments. He was 86 years old. Family sources said that he was unwell for some time and breathed his last at a private hospital here.
Kattungal Subramanian Manilal, popularly known as KS Manilal. He was the former head of the Department of Botany at Calicut University. He has translated the ancient Latin book 'Hortus Malabaricus' into English and Malayalam.
He made a significant contribution to botany.
His decades-long contribution to botany, especially his efforts to translate the 17th-century botanical treatise Hortus Malabaricus, documenting the rich flora of the Malabar region (south-west coast of India), into English and Malayalam, brought him wide recognition. This treatise remains an important resource for researchers, academics, and students studying the botanical history of the region.
Published more than 200 research papers
Mani Lal wrote many books and published more than 200 research papers. Apart from this, he also discovered many new plant species. He was awarded many national and international awards. The Center honored him with Padma Shri in 2020 for his contribution to the field of science.
