In Texas, USA, a Pakistani-origin youth took four people, hostage, in a Jewish shrine and tried his best to get the neuroscientist Afia Siddiqui released by the name of Lady Al Qaeda. However, this Pakistani man, who had British citizenship, died in the operation of American commandos. The police named him Malik Faisal Akram, who was said to be badly affected by the radicalization spread in Pakistan. However, Pakistan's love for those accused of spreading terrorism is not new. Especially in the case of neuroscientist Afia Siddiqui, this love is very old. Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan himself has promised to free Afia in his manifesto four years ago to the Pakistani people.
It is worth noting that Afiya Siddiqui is the same neuroscientist whose ties with Al Qaeda have been exposed. Afia has also been convicted of attempted murder of US military officers while in custody in Afghanistan. Currently, this woman is serving a prison sentence of 86 years in a US prison.
However, despite these cases, Pakistan is constantly trying its best to free Afia. During the time Barack Obama was the US President, the Pakistani government had offered him to release Afia in exchange for a soldier in a Pakistani jail. Not only this, in 2018, the Parliament of Pakistan had passed a resolution, which said that the government would continue to raise the issue of Afiya Siddiqui's release with the US. In this resolution, Afia was even called the daughter of Pakistan.
Not only this, at the time when Imran Khan had presented his claim for the post of Prime Minister, the promise of freeing Afiya Siddiqui from American prison was included in the manifesto of his party-PTI. Imran's manifesto said- "These Pakistanis abroad are our biggest asset, who have been denied their civil rights. Such people are not able to contribute even to the economy of Pakistan due to weak and incomplete legal procedures." We will decide that Pakistanis living abroad also get the right to vote in the country."
The manifesto further said, "We will provide consular and legal services to all such people imprisoned abroad and will try our best to bring back prisoners like Dr. Afiya Siddiqui to Pakistan."
