India's young shuttler Lakshya Sen reached the men's singles semi-finals on Friday. He has become the first Indian to reach the men's semi-finals in badminton in the history of the Olympics. He defeated Taiwan's Chu Tin Chen 19-21, 21-15, 21-12. Now he will fight for the medal.
Lakshya started with a win in the Paris Olympics. However, his first-round win was declared invalid. He won against Guatemala's Kevin Cordon in the men's singles badminton competition played on Saturday. But Cordon withdrew his name due to an elbow injury. In this way, only three players were left in Group L, which included Christie and Caragi apart from Sen.
Before the win against Chu Tin Chen on Friday, Lakshya Sen faced HS Prannoy in the pre-quarterfinals of men's singles. In the match played on Thursday, world-ranking 19 Lakshya defeated 13th-ranked Prannoy. With this, Prannoy's journey ended in the Paris Olympics. Earlier, he defeated world number four player Jonathan Christie of Indonesia 21-18, 21-12 in straight games.
Born in Almora, Uttarakhand, Lakshya started playing at the age of eight under the guidance of his father DK Sen (badminton coach). His family recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru, where he learned the tricks of the game from renowned coaches Vimal Kumar and Prakash Padukone.
Lakshya's competitive spirit was evident from the beginning. In 2016, he won a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Championships and topped the world junior rankings in 2017. In 2018 too, he won silver medals at the Asian Junior Championships and the Summer Youth Olympics.
In 2019, he continued to set new records with several titles including the Dutch Open and the SaarLorLux Open. In 2021 he won a bronze medal at the World Championships and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games as well as contributing to India's historic Thomas Cup win in 2022.
