A terrible landslide following heavy rains has wreaked havoc in Wayanad district of Kerala. Landslides occurred in different hilly areas near Meppadi on Tuesday morning. Hundreds of houses, vehicles, and shops were submerged in water in Mundakai and Choorlamala towns. Many people died in this accident, while hundreds of people were stranded. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that several teams have been sent for rescue operations in the affected areas. However, heavy rains are causing a lot of difficulties in relief and rescue work.
Announcement of giving two lakh rupees
Many people including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi have expressed grief over this entire accident. Even PM Modi has announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the families of each person killed in the landslide. Also, Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.
All possible help will be provided by the Center: PM Modi.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that the death toll has risen to 11. Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi said on the social media platform X, 'I am saddened by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My condolences are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers for those who are injured. Rescue operations are currently underway to help all the affected people. Spoke to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and also assured all possible help from the Center given the current situation there.'
JP Nadda also expressed grief over the devastation.
Union Minister and BJP President JP Nadda expressed grief over the Wayanad landslide and directed Kerala BJP chief K. Surendran to reach the spot as soon as possible. The BJP National President has appealed to all the party workers to reach the spot and help in the relief work.

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and former MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi also expressed grief over the accident. He said, 'I am deeply saddened by the massive landslide near Meppadi in Wayanad. I have spoken to the Chief Minister of Kerala and the Wayanad District Collector, who assured me that rescue operations are underway. I have requested them to ensure coordination with all agencies, set up a control room, and inform us about any assistance required for relief efforts. I will speak to the Union Ministers and request them to provide all possible assistance to Wayanad. I urge all UDF workers to assist the administration in rescue and relief operations.'
