Lula da Silva will be the new president of Brazil, the largest country in Latin America. He has defeated the incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro. Lula belongs to the Left Workers' Party. According to the New York Times report, he will take office on January 1, 2023, until then Bolsonaro's caretaker will remain president.

 

The second round of voting for the presidential election took place on 30 October. Lula da Silva got 50.90%, while Bolsonaro got 49.10% of the vote. According to the Brazilian constitution, a candidate must secure at least 50% of the vote to win an election. In the first round of voting held last month, Lula got 48.4%, while Bolsonaro got 43.23% of the vote.

 

580 days in jail

Lula da Silva, 77, campaigned to end corruption in the election field. He said that corruption increased during Bolsonaro's era. By the way, Lula has also been president and he had to step down due to corruption. He spent 580 days in jail after the corruption charges were proved true.

 

This year Lula was running for the presidential election for the 6th time, in which he won. He had contested elections for the first time in 1989. This will be the third time that Lula will take the presidency. Before this, he was elected President twice between 2003 and 2010. Before joining politics, he used to work in a factory.

 

Now the eyes of the world are on Bolsonaro's reaction

After the election of the President, the eyes of the whole world are now on Bolsonaro and his supporters. Bolsonaro had already made it clear that if he lost the election, he would follow the path of former US President Donald Trump and would not accept the results.

 

Now after his defeat, the danger of violence in the country has increased. A huge police force has been deployed. Bolsonaro supporters were roaming freely with weapons in many places despite orders not to carry weapons within 100 meters of polling stations. He was engaged in threatening the voters.

 

Politicians were campaigning wearing bulletproof jackets

This time political hatred in Brazil increased so much that both Bolsonaro and Lula were seen campaigning wearing bulletproof jackets. Recently a Lula supporter was stabbed to death by a supporter of President Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro was even attacked during the campaign in the last election.

 

Gang culture in Brazil is the reason for the high crime here. During elections, big political parties hire these gangs to spread violence and make voters in their favor. More than 250 incidents of political violence took place during the election campaign itself. In these, more than 2000 people were also arrested.

 

There will be 3 big challenges before the new government

Lula's government will face three major challenges. First environmental balance - 60% of the Amazon forest is in Brazil. They play an important role in maintaining the balance of the world's climate. It also helps in fighting global warming. But Brazil suffered its worst drought in 90 years due to forest fires, illegal quarrying, and the felling of trees. Lula has always been in favor of environmental protection. After he became the President, now Brazil can overcome problems like the felling of trees.

 

Second - starvation. In Brazil, 33 million people are on the verge of starvation, the highest since 2004. Due to this, there is pressure on the government to reduce the prices of food and fuel globally. Third - the deteriorating economy. Brazil is the 9th largest economy in the world. But in the last few months, the situation here has become worse due to inflation. The rise in prices of items of daily use is hitting the poor more than the rich, who have an average daily spending capacity of less than $1.90 (Rs 150). Citigroup Chief Economist Ernesto Revilla said – This period of inflation is more harmful to the poor and equitable distribution of income. It is clear from this that now there is a greater possibility of unrest.
