The Maha Kumbh (Mahakumbh 2025) started with the holy dip of Paush Purnima on Monday at the Triveni Sangam in Teerthraj Prayagraj. Paush Purnima started at 4.32 am in the Brahma Muhurta after midnight on Sunday. However, devotees started bathing at various ghats along the holy confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and invisible Saraswati from midnight itself. With this, the rituals of Maha Kumbh bathing started. Now, with Makar Sankranti falling on Tuesday, this time the unique coincidence of Makar Sankranti Amrit Snan festival is being added on the second day itself. There is enthusiasm among the devotees due to both the bathing festivals happening together.
Despite the increasing cold and drizzle, there is a continuous flow of devotees. The camps of saints and mahats are awake. The entire fair area is echoing with sermons and verses of the Vedas. The district and fair administration have completed preparations at every level. Tight security arrangements have been made.
More devotees will reach due to the coincidence of 144 years
This Maha Kumbh is expected to increase the GDP of the country by one percent. Economists believe that there will be a business of about four lakh crore rupees. Maha Kumbh is held every 12th year, but this time due to the coincidence of 144 years, it is estimated that more devotees will come this time than in previous years.
On Sunday morning itself, a procession of vehicles and a fair of pedestrians started appearing on the roads of Prayagraj. Due to rain in the afternoon, people stopped here and there looking for shade, but as soon as the drizzle stopped, there were a situation of jam everywhere due to people coming down on the roads together. The police had a tough time dealing with this. In such a situation, given the pressure, traffic was stopped on some bridges in the Maha Kumbh area. Some such amendments were made in the traffic management plan on an immediate basis, and on the special bathing festival, rehearsals of preparations were also done in the Maha Kumbh area spread over four thousand hectares.
Flower shower from helicopter on devotees
On Paush Purnima and Makar Sankranti, the government is showering flowers from helicopters on saints and devotees who have come to bathe at all the 44 ghats spread over an area of 12 km. The Uttar Pradesh government hopes that about 40 crore devotees and tourists from the country and abroad will come to the Maha Kumbh. According to government estimates, if each of the 40 crore devotees spends an average of five thousand rupees, then the Maha Kumbh can generate a business of two lakh crore rupees.
The average expenditure per person in this mega event can also increase to 10 thousand rupees and the total business can reach four lakh crore rupees. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied about 45 thousand tonnes of steel in the Maha Kumbh. A major change has been made in Prayagraj before the largest congregation of followers of Sanatan Dharma. More than 200 roads have been constructed, widened, and beautified, which has provided better connectivity to crores of devotees participating in the grand spiritual event.
