Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Putin on Tuesday (September 12) praised PM Modi's policies and said that he is doing the 'right thing' in promoting the Make in India program. Putin made this comment in response to a media question on Russian-made cars at the 8th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
Putin said domestically manufactured automobiles should be used and India has already set an example of this through its policies under the leadership of PM Modi.
Putin mentioned Make in India
"You know, we didn't have domestically produced cars then, but we do now," Putin said in an address at the forum. They indeed look more modest than the Mercedes or Audi cars that we bought in droves in the 1990s. But, this is not an issue. I think we should emulate many of our partners, for example, India. They focus on manufacturing and using Indian-made vehicles. I think Prime Minister Modi is doing the right thing in promoting Make in India program.
Putin is taking ideas from India
Putin said it is absolutely fine to use Russian-made automobiles. We have Russian-made automobiles and we should use them, Putin said. This will not violate our WTO obligations, absolutely not. This will be related to state procurement. "We should create a chain about what cars different categories of officials can drive, so they can use domestically produced cars," Putin said in Vladivostok.

Putin's comments came after India, the US, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi on Saturday.
