
Shahjahan Sheikh, accused in the Sandeshkhali violence case in West Bengal, was arrested by the police on Thursday morning. Party President in Bengal Sukant Majumdar has said that the movement of BJP and women of Sandeshkhali brought the Bengal government to its knees and due to this they were forced to arrest Shahjahan Sheikh.
What did the BJP leaders say?
Sukant Majumdar said, "Due to the continuous agitation of BJP, this government was forced to arrest Shahjahan Sheikh. Already this government was not accepting that something like this had happened (in Sandeshkhali). We have already said It was said that they will force the government, to bring them to their knees so that they are forced to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan. Today, due to the movement of the BJP and the movement of mothers and sisters of Sandeshkhali, the government and Mamata Banerjee have been forced to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan. For."
BJP's national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala said, "What is TMC boasting about today? When BJP became the voice of the women of Sandeshkhali and the court repeatedly reprimanded them, then Trinamool got Shahjahan Shaikh arrested. This is just an eyewash." On Shahjahan's arrest, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose said, "This is democracy, we waited but the work that had to be done was done. This is a lesson for everyone, now let's hope that law and order will be restored." There will be a new dawn in Bengal. I am happy that good things are happening."
TMC leader was absconding for more than 50 days
It is noteworthy that Shahjahan Sheikh was absconding after the mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials and the police were searching for him for more than 50 days. He was also accused of harassment of women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali. After this matter went to the Calcutta High Court, the Bengal government claimed that the police would arrest Shahjahan within seven days.
After Shahjahan's arrest, police said that he was arrested from a house in Minakha in North 24 Parganas district. After this, he was taken to Basirhat court, where he was kept in the lockup of the court itself.
