Guwahati, Feb 9 (IANS) An irate mob in Assam's Dima Hasao district lynched a militant and injured two others when they reached a village where people were celebrating a festival, police said Monday.
The incident took place Sunday in the remote Thongikro village, about 70 km from district headquarters Haflong.
The villagers were celebrating the Bishu Dima festival. Four cadres of the lesser known militant outfit Dima Hasao National Army (DHNA) appeared there and they had an altercation with the villagers.
"The angry villagers then attacked the four militants and beat them up severely, leading to the death of one," a police official said in Dima Hasao district.
Another militant, who also faced the public wrath, managed to escape.
"It's a remote location and we do not have a permanent post there. However, we have deployed security personnel in and around the area," the police official said.
Last week, five cadres of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were beaten up by a mob when they had come to extort money during a function in Borsimaluguri village in Baksa district. The five were later handed over to police by the villagers.
