Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is facing a crisis in Nepal, will present a motion of confidence in Parliament on 10 May. KP Sharma Oli will offer this confidence motion as part of the continuance in power. In an official statement on Sunday, President Vidya Devi Bhandari called a session of Parliament on May 10 on the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli to seek the trust vote of the government.
Oli (69) needs at least 136 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives to get the confidence vote as four members are still suspended. According to Nepali media reports, during a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Oli said he would try to win a confidence vote in Parliament to retain power.
Ollie decided a political deadlock triggered in the country following the Prime Minister's controversial decision to dissolve the House of Representatives last year. Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Leela Nath Shrestha told the Kathmandu Post that the Prime Minister will present a motion of confidence vote on 10 May. This will be a one-day session only.
Shrestha said that Oli wants to take the stalled political process forward. The government is confident that it will win the trust vote. If this is not done, there will be a process of forming a coalition government. Prime Minister Oli made this decision at a time when Nepal is facing the second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic.
The highest ever 7,137 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Nepal on Sunday. The number of infected in the country has increased to 3,29,000 while the death toll has risen to 3,325.
