Taiwan's research organization Double Thinks Labs prepared a database of China's influence on 82 countries. This is the China Index 2022. This is the first study of its kind.

Different countries have been ranked in the China Index. Pakistan tops the list of countries with the most Chinese influence. According to this study, China has maximum control over Pakistan. European country Germany is at number 19 and America at number 21.

How does China control Pakistan?

For its domestic market, Pakistan exports electronics, hardware, and mobile phones to China. Apart from this, Pakistan's defense sector has acquired modern technology weapons with the help of China. Trade between China and Pakistan increased by 278% from 2007 to 2015.

China helps in the production and import of weapons, missiles, cannons, fighter jets, and tanks for the Pakistani army. The Pakistani army also gets training from China from time to time.

China has also helped Pakistan to repay the loan from IMF and World Bank to deal with the weak economy. Even in the United Nations Security Council, China has given clean chit to Pakistan and has also helped in saving Pakistan from being blacklisted in the FATF list.

By 2020, China has invested in projects worth about Rs 5 lakh crore in Pakistan's railway, airport, and energy sectors. The biggest project in this is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. This project is likely to employ about 25 million people in Pakistan in 15 years. Apart from this, till the completion of the project, the annual economic growth rate of Pakistan will also increase at the rate of 2.5%.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor aims to create infrastructure in Pakistan. In this, main rail lines connecting Karachi, Jacobabad, Multan, Peshawar, and Khunjreb Pass will be built. About 66 thousand crore rupees will be spent on the Karachi-Peshawar line.

China has made the biggest investment of Rs 2.7 lakh crore in Pakistan's energy sector. By 2030, these projects will meet 75% of Pakistan's electricity needs.

Similarly, with China's investment in the shipping sector, a transportation network is being prepared from Gwadar to Kashgar. This will benefit the shipping industry. Shipping time through this network will come down from 45 days to just 10 days.

There are three big reasons for China to invest in Pakistan…

First reason: China imports 80% of its oil supply requirement from the Malacca Strait of the Indian Ocean. Its distance is more than 10,000 kilometers. If this import can be completed from Gwadar Port of Pakistan, then this distance will be just 3000 km. In this way, if China takes even half of its oil through the route of Pakistan, then China will benefit from about 16 thousand crore rupees.

Second reason: There is often a fear of war on the Malacca Strait because this route can be closed for China anytime. In the Indo-Pacific region, the US has set up bases for its Air Force and Navy in countries such as Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, and Australia. A large number of US Army fighter aircraft and naval aircraft are stationed in these countries.

Third reason: Setting up road networks and industries on China's western frontier. But, to export the products of these industries, China needs to open the way on the western frontier as well. For this, China has prepared a modern silk route for itself from Iran and Turkey to Europe through Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Along with this China, Pakistan Economic Corridor is also being built.

According to Dr. Rajan Kumar, Foreign Expert and Dean of International Studies at JNU, a major reason for China's interest in Pakistan is to control India. China does not want direct conflict with India. Because of this, investment in Pakistan is increasing.

Apart from this, China wants to reach the Gulf countries through Pakistan. Wants to make China an alternative to the Indian Ocean for oil imports from Gulf countries. For this reason, China has developed an alternate route as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.
