कोरोनोवायरस लॉकडाउन के बीच घर लौट रहे कम से कम नौ प्रवासी मजदूर शनिवार की सुबह दो अलग-अलग घटनाओं में मारे गए। जहां मुंबई-अहमदाबाद एक्सप्रेसवे पर चार लोग मारे गए, वहीं हैदराबाद में पांच लोग मारे गए।
गुजरात में सात प्रवासी मजदूर देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में अपने घरों को लौटने के लिए पैदल चल रहे थे। महाराष्ट्र सीमा पर पहुंचने पर, उन्हें पुलिस द्वारा वापस लौटा दिया गया। वे मुंबई-अहमदाबाद एक्सप्रेसवे पर लौटने के लिए ले जा रहे थे जब वीरवार को एक टेम्पो ने उन्हें कथित रूप से टक्कर मार दी। जहां उनमें से चार की मौत हो गई, वहीं गंभीर हालत में अस्पतालों में भर्ती हैं।
मृतकों में से दो की पहचान कर ली गई है लेकिन दो अभी भी अज्ञात हैं।
एक अन्य घटना में, हैदराबाद में शमशाबाद राजमार्ग के पास एक ट्रक ने बोलेरो पिकअप वैन को टक्कर मार दी। लगभग 30 लोग, उनमें से सभी मजदूर और उनके परिवार, तेलंगाना में सूर्यपेट से कर्नाटक के रायचूर जा रहे थे। इनमें से पांच की मौके पर ही मौत हो गई जबकि छह को गंभीर चोटों के साथ उस्मानिया अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया है।
वे मंगलवार को प्रधान मंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी द्वारा 21 दिन की देशव्यापी तालाबंदी की घोषणा के बाद घर लौट रहे थे।

छोटे और बड़े समूहों में इन लोगों को कोरोनोवायरस लॉकडाउन के मद्देनजर उत्तर प्रदेश के विभिन्न जिलों में अपने घरों तक पहुंचने के प्रयास में गाजीपुर में पैदल दिल्ली की सीमा पार करते देखा गया था।
विशेष रूप से, यह ऐसे समय में आता है जब सामाजिक गड़बड़ी को बार-बार वायरस के प्रसार को रोकने के लिए जोर दिया जा रहा है, लेकिन परिस्थितियों ने मजदूर वर्ग को पैदल दूरी को पार करने के लिए मजबूर कर दिया है, जिससे बीमारी का खतरा कम हो जाता है, जब उन्हें कोई अन्य विकल्प दिखाई नहीं देता है ।
मंगलवार को तालाबंदी की घोषणा के बाद, अधिकारियों द्वारा सभी सार्वजनिक परिवहन बंद कर दिए जाने के कारण प्रवासी मजदूर पैदल घर जाने लगे। शनिवार को, उनमें से कुछ को राष्ट्रीय राजधानी में आवश्यक आपूर्ति देने के बाद अलग-अलग हिस्सों में लौटने वाले ट्रकों पर बसों या हिचकोले खाते हुए देखा गया था।
