The US signed a security agreement with Australia and Britain last week to deal with the challenges related to the Indo-Pacific. The deal is being seen from the perspective of controlling China's aggression in the Indo-Pacific region, but the US has refused to include India or Japan in this partnership.
The partnership between the US, UK, and Australia was named AUKUS. It means the names of the three countries. On the question related to its expansion, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a press conference on Wednesday that no one else would be included in the partnership for the security of the Indo-Pacific. A reporter had asked this question to Saki because there is a meeting of QUAD countries to be held in America on 24th September and QUAD also includes India and Japan. On this Saki jokingly said that AUKUS will become JAUKUS or JAIAUKUS?
What is the US, UK, Australia agreement?
Australia has formed a security group with the US and UK to build nuclear-powered submarines. This alliance (AUKUS) will be able to control China's aggression in the Indo-Pacific region. In this context, the entry of AUKUS into the Indo-Pacific Security Group is also a big achievement for India. It was believed that this would open new avenues for nuclear cooperation for India because so far we are getting help only from Russia in this matter. However, the US has now made it clear that it will not include India in AUKUS.
AUKUS increased China's uneasiness
China is frightened by the security partnership of the US, Australia, and Britain for the Indo-Pacific region. China, stunned by its ignorance, had said in the past that these countries should not take decisions with the aim of harming the interests of any third party. They should shed their Cold War mentality and ideological prejudices.
How different is AUKUS from QUAD?
The quad countries include the US, Australia, Japan, and India. Together they hold multilateral talks. It doesn't have to be high technology or any big deal. At the same time, apart from QUAD, the AUKUS agreement with Australia is the beginning of a new military alliance. There is a kind of hesitation in India in making such a military alliance because it wants to have relations with America as well as Russia and Iran.
