Corona cases are increasing rapidly once again in the world. Due to this scientists are also expressing different apprehensions about the wave of corona this time. Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed emergency use of breathalyzers to detect Covid-19 through inhalation. Through this device, Covid-19 can be detected through breathing.
The name of this device is InspectIR Covid-19 Breathalyzer. It uses a technique called gas mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) to separate and identify chemical mixtures and the five volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in exhaled breath. Detects fast. The FDA said in a statement that when the InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer detects the presence of VOC markers of SARS-CoV-2, returning a presumptive positive test result, molecular testing should be used.
According to the FDA, through this device, Covid-19 can be easily detected through breathing. Its report comes within about three minutes. Which can identify five volatile organic compounds of coronavirus through the breath of a person. The agency said about 2,409 people had participated in a study. In which both asymptomatic and asymptomatic people were included. The test had a 99.3 percent specificity rate, which measures the percentage of negative test samples correctly identified.
The FDA also reported that the InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer had a 91.2 percent sensitivity rate, which measures the percentage of positive test samples correctly identified. However, the health agency said that a molecular test should be used to confirm the positive test results returned by the COVID-19 breath test. According to The Hill, Jeff Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in a statement today's authorization is another example of the rapid innovation that happens with clinical trials for COVID-19. The agency said that with this 160 samples can be tested daily. It is likely to increase later.
