One country-one election bill will be presented in Lok Sabha today, BJP issued a whip to MPs

The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill for 'One Nation One Election' is going to be introduced in Parliament on Tuesday to conduct simultaneous elections of Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Later it will be referred to the joint committee of both houses.

 

A top government official said that Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the bill. After this, he will request Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for extensive discussion. The committee will be constituted proportionally based on the number of MPs of different parties.

 

What does subsection five of section-two of the bill say?

 

The bill also has a provision for the situation when elections of any assembly cannot be held along with the parliamentary elections. According to subsection five of section-two of the bill, 'If the Election Commission feels that the elections of any assembly cannot be held along with the Lok Sabha elections, then it can request the President to issue an order that the elections of the said assembly can be held at a later date.'

 

Amendments can be made to these articles

 

Through the bill, Article 82A (simultaneous elections of Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies) will be added to the Constitution. Amendments will be made in Article 83 (term of the Houses of Parliament), Article 172 (term of State Legislative Assemblies), and Article 327 (Power of Parliament to make provisions related to elections of Legislative Assemblies).

 

The bill also provides that after it becomes a law, a notification will be issued by the President on the date of the first meeting of the Lok Sabha after the general election and the date of issuing the notification will be called the appointed date. The term of the Lok Sabha will be five years from that date.
