Frustrated with the continuous falling prices of onions, the farmers have stopped the sale of onions in the mandi. Angry farmers in Maharashtra's Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee have decided to stop the onion auction. Let us tell you that in the Lasalgaon APMC, the largest onion market in Asia, onion prices have reached two to four rupees per kg in recent times. This has increased resentment of onion products.
A representative of onion-producing farmers said that the government should immediately release a compensation of Rs 1500 per quintal to the farmers and buy their produce at the rate of Rs 15 to 20 per kg. If this is not done then they will not allow the auction to continue at Lasalgaon HPMC. Let us tell you that Asia's largest onion market is located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra.
On Monday, when the Lasalgaon mandi opened, the minimum onion prices reached Rs 200 per quintal. During this, the maximum price of onion was Rs 800 per quintal and the average price was Rs 400 to 450 per quintal. These fresh onion prices have increased the fury of the growers. Angry farmers, expressing their displeasure under the leadership of the Maharashtra State Onion Producers Organization, stopped the auction of interest in the mandi.
Let us inform you that earlier on Saturday, 2404 quintals of onion reached APMC for sale. Then the minimum price of onion was Rs 351 per quintal. While the maximum price was Rs 1231 per quintal. On Saturday, the average price of onion was Rs 625 per quintal.
Bharat Dighole, leader of the Maharashtra State Kanda Utpadak Sangathan, said, "During the current budget session of the Vidhan Sabha, the government should declare a compensation of Rs 1500 per quintal for onion farmers with immediate effect. Onions should be procured at Rs 3 to 4 per quintal." Onions being sold at the rate of Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg should be bought to give relief to the farmers. If this demand is not met today, the auction of onions in APMC will not start under any circumstances. According to APMC sources, a meeting is being held to resolve the issue and they say that the auction may start after talks with the angry onion growers.
