The central government is now going to take strict action against those who play online games. The government is seeing a big 'game' through these games. Because the use of money in such games seems to be increasing rapidly. The government also has apprehensions that online gaming can be used to convert black money into white and the amount earned from it can be used to carry out terrorist activities. Therefore, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is in the process of finalizing the policy to regulate online gaming. Under this, age verification along with KYC will also be mandatory for all real-money games in the country.
900 gaming companies will come under the purview
Reliable sources told Amar Ujala that the purpose of these rules of the government is to address the concern of user safety and financial loss in real money games. In the coming one to two days, the ministry may also recommend the formation of a self-regulatory organization for the online gaming industry in this context. This policy can be issued in two to three weeks. These new provisions of the government will be incorporated in the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021. With this rule of the government, about 900 gaming companies will come under the purview of this new policy. These also include unicorns like MPL and Dream-11. Both these companies have about 10 lakh users each.
The source said that after the new rules of online gaming are implemented, children below the age of 18 will not be able to access these games. This rule of the government will apply to all kinds of games whether it is probability or chance-based or skill-based. To reduce the risk of addiction, gaming platforms will also have to display warnings after a certain amount of time. Apart from this, security norms for depositing and withdrawing money from gaming platforms will also be included in these regulations.
Children aged five to 14 playing online games
In today's era, the craze of online gaming is increasing rapidly among young people. Cases like suicide among children are also coming to the fore after the loss of money in gaming. According to data from the All India Gaming Federation, an online gaming industry body, around 45 to 40 lakh gamers pay to play games on gaming platforms. About 18 percent of the total online games are played by the age group of 5 to 14 years. The size of this industry is around $2.2 billion. Which is estimated to reach seven billion dollars by the financial year 2026. The real money online gaming market is currently growing at a CAGR of 27% annually, making it the fastest-growing segment of the $24 billion media and entertainment market.
