Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India has turned its diversity into a strength for democracy. It has also proven to the world how democratic institutions and processes can provide stability, speed, and scale to democracy.
Inaugurating the 28th Commonwealth Speakers' Conference (CSPOC) at the Constitution House, PM Modi said, "Democracy in India means empowerment of the last person. This spirit of public welfare has freed 250 million people from the curse of poverty."
Becoming the world's fastest-growing economy shattered myths.
The Prime Minister said, "When India gained independence, countries around the world feared that democracy would not survive here. The world doubted whether democracy would survive in a country with such immense diversity. Even if democracy survived, India would still face difficulties in progress. However, India has proved those fears unfounded by turning its diversity into a strength. Now, by becoming the world's fastest-growing economy, it has shattered myths about development."
PM Modi said, "India has a long tradition of debate, dialogue, and collective decision-making. Democracy here means access to services at the bottom of the ladder. Democracy is successful because the people are at the center of governance. With the spirit of public welfare, every government measure reaches every person without any discrimination.
Our Democracy is Extraordinary, Full of Diversity
At the Commonwealth Speakers' Conference, PM Modi said, "The scale of India's democracy is truly extraordinary. 980 million citizens were registered to vote in the 2024 general elections, which is more than the population of some continents. More than 8,000 candidates and over 700 political parties were contesting. These elections also saw record participation of women voters."
He said, "Indian democracy is rich in diversity, where hundreds of languages are spoken. India is developing rapidly: Giving information about the country's economic progress, PM Modi said, "Currently, India is the fastest-growing economy in the world. UPI is the world's largest digital payment system. Currently, India is the world's largest vaccine producer."
