Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday once again expressed concern about digital fraud and cybercrime. The Prime Minister has expressed concern about this earlier as well. Addressing the 59th Annual Conference of Director General of Police / Inspector General of Police in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on Sunday, the Prime Minister said that cyber crime and crimes like digital arrest and deepfake will have a serious impact on social and family life.
Terrorism and left-wing extremism were also discussed.
The Prime Minister advised increasing the use of technology in police functioning and reducing the workload on police constables in the conference of top police officials. PM Modi said that police stations should be the focal point for the allocation of resources. According to the official statement, during the conference, emerging security concerns on the Bangladesh, and Myanmar border, urban policing, and strategy to counter misleading posts on social media were discussed. Along with this, there was also an in-depth discussion on emerging challenges of national security including terrorism, left-wing extremism, cybercrime, economic security, immigration, coastal security, and narco-trafficking.
Call to turn technology challenges into opportunities.
During the conference, the Prime Minister also cautioned against the threats posed by digital fraud, cybercrime, and AI technology and called for turning challenges into opportunities by using artificial intelligence. The Prime Minister appreciated the initiatives taken in urban policing and suggested that each initiative should be implemented simultaneously in 100 cities. He emphasized creating a smart police system and called upon the police to be strategic, meticulous, adaptable, credible, and transparent. The idea of smart policing was introduced by the Prime Minister in a conference held in Guwahati in 2014. It envisaged systemic changes to make the Indian police tough and sensitive, modern and mobile, vigilant and accountable, reliable and responsive, tech-savvy and trained (smart).
Discussing the success of the hackathon in solving some key problems, the Prime Minister also suggested holding a National Police Hackathon. He also highlighted the need to focus on port security and prepare a future action plan for this purpose. The Prime Minister urged the police to modernize and realign themselves with the vision of a developed India.

Around 250 officers of the level of Director General of Police and Inspector General attended the three-day conference, while over 750 others participated virtually. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, among others, also attended the meeting. In 2013, the annual meeting was held in New Delhi. In 2014, after the Modi government came to power, it was decided to hold an event organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Intelligence Bureau outside the national capital. The conference was held in Guwahati in 2014, Dhordo in Rann of Kutch in 2015, Kevadia in 2018, IISER, Pune in 2019, Police Headquarters, Lucknow in 2021, National Agricultural Science Complex, Pusa, Delhi in 2023 and Jaipur in January 2024. Continuing this tradition, this time the conference was organized in Bhubaneswar.
